International Women in Engineering Day is a celebration that raises awareness of the profile of women who are involved in the challenging, creative and deeply satisfying world of engineering. This year's strapline being "shape the world" gives an idea of the power and enthusiasm behind the thinking.
In the Northeast of England we just happen to have some of the most innovative and forward thinking engineering companies, not only in the UK, but also in the world. Our long-standing clients, Tharsus and Universal Wolf are proud to support the event and show how they have some very talented female engineers at every level within their companies; from apprentice level to quality engineering and business.
They asked us to shoot some portraits of engineers for this specific campaign, the brief being to capture the confident characters of each person whilst also being mindful of the company's brand and existing websites. We set about shooting in different locations within the factories of both companies, looking for backgrounds that would create a story without being too over-powering or distracting. We were working in a busy working environment so time, space and light were limited. Our subjects were made to feel comfortable and relaxed; lit with portable flash, mixed with available light, to give the realistic, but powerful, look and feel that we were aiming for. The resulting photographs hit the nail on the head and were very well received by all, including the engineers themselves.
We have many years of experience in photographing this type of work; being able to think on our feet and solve lighting problems instantly makes doing these jobs an absolute pleasure.
